Cooper White, an innovative musician and composer from Alaska, announces the release of his new track "Lotus," set for February 27th. This unique fusion of electro hip hop and contemporary jazz, with the saxophone taking the lead as the main voice, promises to be a powerful reminder that greatness can arise even from the most adverse circumstances.
The Story Behind "Lotus"
In Cooper White’s own words:
“I wrote this song for myself. It’s about believing in your own potential. Just as an instrument requires practice, composition demands daily dedication. 'Lotus' was born from that growth process.”
The title refers to the lotus flower, a universal symbol of resilience:
“Just like the lotus grows in swamps, people can emerge from difficult environments and become something extraordinary,” explains Cooper.
Musical Innovation: The Saxophone as the Voice
Breaking boundaries, Cooper reinvents the traditional hip hop/pop structure by replacing vocals with saxophone melodies:
“I wanted the saxophone to convey the emotion of a sung lyric. To achieve this, I first wrote the verses and then adapted that cadence to the instrument,” says the artist, who drew inspiration from classics like Wayne Shorter’s "Footprints" and Miles Davis, as well as pop hits like Pharrell Williams’ "Happy" and Clean Bandit's "Rather Be."
The creative process included international collaborations:
“I worked with a friend in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to give the production that electro hip hop style I was looking for, far from traditional gangsta rap,” adds Cooper, a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music.
